Nerdfighter Benedict? Or just failed Vulcan?

As far as I can tell, there are eight possibilities here. (I’ve spent a fair bit of time thinking about this.)

1. Benedict Cumberbatch is a hardcore nerdfighter and when Martin Freeman threw up a gang sign, Cumberbatch was like, “I have one of those.”

2. Cumberbatch, who obviously has a relationship with Star Trek, just naturally changed the Vulcan sign (pulling in the thumbs, turning the palms inward, crossing the arms) in precisely the same way that I happened to change the Vulcan sign when I first made the nerdfighter sign in the halcyon days of 2007.

3. One of the interns on set who has gained the trust of Benedict Cumberbatch was like, “If you do your hands like this, the Internet will get really excited.” And so he did.

4. BBC, in their infinite wisdom, staged the entire photo and Cumberbatch was taught the nerdfighter sign (I MEAN LOOK AT THE PERFECTION OF HIS NERDFIGHTER SIGN! He seems so comfortable and confident in it, almost as if it is muscle memory, almost as if he has flashed it to his laptop screen on hundreds of occasions in the past, but I digress) and this photograph was staged to get people psyched for Sherlock, although what tiny segment of nerdfighteria is not already psyched for Sherlock? Also, if this is the case, who is Martin Freeman trying to advertise to? Residents of the West Side?

5. Benedict Cumberbatch has a relative or a friend who is a nerdfighter and so he is passingly familiar with nerdfighteria and liked what he has seen and wanted to make us all very happy.

6. The nerdfighter sign also happens to be the hand sign of some obscure English gang with which I am unfamiliar called like The East London Wanderers or The Slightly Intimidating Liverpudlians or whatever.

7. Nerdfighteria actually figures in the plot of the new season of Sherlock. Perhaps a nerdfighter has been (wrongly no doubt!) accused of a murder.

8. Benedict Cumberbatch was playing some kind of British version of Rock Paper Scissors against two invisible opponents, and he went double scissors (as any smart person would).

AHAHAHAHAHA! Especially the last theory. : D

Nevertheless, I truly did enjoy reading this address. It was good fun, interesting and even poignant.

Is it bad that I’m incredibly annoyed over people on facebook? First there’s the whole Bangladeshi bashing- verbally and physically. There’s slander and crude jokes all over the internet- which really isn’t nice at all. It takes two to tango, if you really want to blame someone then you should be mad at the government for sinking that low. But they were smart too, cause they knew these people are yearning for a better life so it really presented itself as a win-win situation. It’s a cheap trick because they enticed them with job opportunities, money and citizenship.

Now if you were in the same, shitty situation can you honestly say that you wouldn’t consider it? One hundred percent sure that you wouldn’t entertain the thought at all? This isn’t just for you, it’s for your family, your children and their future.

So the jokes really have to stop. It’s not funny at all. I find it very insulting.

Next would be how everybody’s treating GE13 results like it’s the end of the world. It’s not. You cannot honestly expect change to happen overnight. I mean come one, we have studied history and we should know that it is impossible for things to magically correct themselves overnight. It takes years and decades of perseverance in order to achieve that. And now everyone’s treating it like all hope is lost. It’s not. It will happen and can happen. It’s disheartening because we all wanted a landslide win, so much so that we didn’t notice that the results were actually a step forward.

Progress- which is something. And that’s always better than nothing.

When they walk in, they are subject to the same racial stereotypes and expectations that exist in the larger society. Students of color do not have the advantage of walking into a classroom as individuals; they walk in as black, brown, or red persons with all the connotations such racialization raises in the classroom. They do not walk into a classroom where the curriculum embraces their histories. They walk into a classroom where their histories and cultures are distorted, where they feel confused about their own identities, vulnerabilities, and oppressions. There is no level of liberal reforms that can alter these experiences for students of color without directly challenging the larger systems in society.”
